Harry McCammon MBE

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our friend and long-standing stalwart of CSNICC, Harry McCammon.

Harry was well known for cricket not only at Stormont but throughout the NCU and further afield. He was originally from the village of Dundrum where he spent his youth and his first introduction to cricket alongside his brother Kenny.

Harry was a left-hand bat who hit the ball hard and has scored a few hundreds during his career. He bowled off spin and was regularly introduced to the attack to break a settled partnership. He was also a very useful fielder.

After Dundrum, Harry spent a few years plying his trade at Downpatrick. He opened the batting for Downpatrick in the Senior Cup final at Ormeau in 1966 against Lisburn, which they won by 140 runs. Harry also topped the batting averages that year for Downpatrick .

From Downpatrick Harry then joined his final club at Stormont, Civil Service and the club we all know today as CSNICC. He opened the batting for several years alongside Austin Branagh forming many formidable partnerships. His love of cricket saw him play well into his late 60s and scoring a century for the 4ths!

Harry also served on various committees at Stormont and the Harry McCammon Cup has been presented annually, for several years, acknowledging the Club Player of the Year. He was instrumental, along with Nigel Rountree, in laying the foundations for womens cricket at Stormont. He helped encourage females to take up the sport and I’m sure was very pleased with the success that our women’s section has achieved in recent years.

Harry trained as a teacher at Stranmillis College and finished his working career as Vice Principal of Rupert Stanley College. In 2001 he received a well deserved MBE for his many dedicated years of service to Young People.

We pass on our sincere condolences to Harry’s wife Jacqueline, his daughter Alison and son Richard, as well as the wider family circle and Harry’s many many friends. We will sorely miss Harry at Stormont. He was part of the furniture, a real club stalwart and one of life’s true gentlemen.

A service to celebrate his life will take place on Wednesday 11th December 2024 in Knockbreda Parish Church at 1pm after a private family committal.
