CSNI won the toss and elected to bat first on a beautiful fine day at Stormont in the first round of the Irish senior cup.
Hunter fell early in the fourth over before Jordan Neill set about rebuilding the innings with a calculated display. When Neil fell for 73 and Dyer soon followed with the score at 124 for four, civil service were in some trouble. Thatโs when Beverland joined Thompson and the pair set about restoring the innings by adding 128 runs unbroken off just 114 balls.
Thompson ended 87 not out of 71 balls with 11 fours and a sixes, while Beverland was unbeaten on 36.
Newbuildings, in pursuit of 253 to win, lost Dunn in the second over caught at mid off from the bowling of Finn Lutton (who fell victim to a groin injury and his second over).
Gareth McKeegan and ex-CIYMS batsman Ryan Hunter, then added 80 in quick time for the second wicket, putting the pressure right back on the hosts.
However, when Jordan Neill claimed the off stump of Newbuildings overseas player Samarth, it gave them some renewed hope.
McKeegan continued on an a confident manner, scoring 65 of 74 balls with seven fours and three sixes including a couple of powerful pull shots over square leg before he chopped on from the bowling of Foster.
Two overs later, Newbuildings, lost their fifth wicket with 144 runs on the board sitting in and around the required run rate.
A 25 run partnership between Doherty and McIvor kept the visitors in the Hunt. However, they were to lose their last five wickets for seven runs with Leckey, claiming three for 28, Neil two for 30, Foster 2 for 33, and Dyer put in a typically parsimonious spell of one for 30 off 10 over to send civil service into the second round of the Irish cup on the 9th of June by margin of 76 runs.
