The 2XI finally got their season underway this Thursday with a rearranged league match against Woodvale at Stormont. The skipper won the toss and decided to bowl first.
Woodvale came out of the blocks quickly, taking 21 off the first over and continued going hard. Jack Woolsey picked up the key wicket of Wayne Horwood, caught by Jordan Wilson at long off.
CSNI’s spinners slowed the scoring rate down considerably, with a few quick wickets falling in the middle overs to Ben Adair in particular (3-14). Woodvale finished the innings on 129-8 with Jack Woolsey picking up a couple of late wickets and finishing with 3-27.
Openers Pat Lutton (15) and Seb Yeates (35) started patiently against some good bowling. Seb in particular was hitting the ball well including a monstrous six over mid wicket.
Scoring was hard to come by and some wickets fell in a cluster, leaving the skipper (25*) and Ross Copeland (20) at the crease needing 41 off 3 overs. Some fantastic running, diving and boundary hitting, including a particularly large straight 6 by Copeland, brought the team to needing 1 off the last ball for victory. This was duly dispatched to the boundary, leaving the 2XI victorious by 4 wickets.
A great win for the 2XI to start the season. Next up will be a few challenging games at the weekend against Lisburn in the Junior Cup and Instonians in the League.
